Sending people to a competitor shows great integrity and a lot of personal service savvy. Years ago when I worked at Advance Auto parts in South Carolina. Us counter peons had a great relationship with the Auto Zone down the street and often called them ourselves to find out if they had something that we didn't. They would do the same with us. We actually got to know each other pretty well that way.
The customers, though... they thought it was great as it saved them from calling all over town. For the most part, I think the customer service kept them coming back to us first, even in light of us not always having what they wanted.
